SKIN CARE SHOW "DERMTV" LAUNCHES

In today's beauty news, New York dermatologist Dr. Neal Schultz has launched a new online beauty and skin care show.

These days more and more people are turning to the internet (specifically YouTube) for their beauty needs and more online beauty celebrities are being born.  In an earlier post, we talked about YouTube makeup sensation Lauren Luke.  Her easy to follow makeup tutorials led to a cosmetics line, newspaper column and book deal.  Today we thought you might be interested in the newest wannabe online star, dermatologist Dr. Neal Schultz.

Dr. Schultz launched a show on YouTube and on his own website titled DermTV.  The idea behind the show is to answer viewer questions on beauty and skin care in an accurate, medically correct manner.  Topics covered include at home skin care techniques, new technology for facial rejuvenation, preventing and fixing sun damage from wrinkles to skin cancer, breaking news in dermatology and general skin care topics.

The videos are informative and not too long.  Take a look here.

BEAUTY BEDDING WITH NATURA

In an earlier post, we talked about beauty bedding in the UK.  It now appears that the craze 60s.JPGis starting to hit America.

Bedding company Natura has launched Natura's Aloe Vera Beauty Pillow.  According to a recent article in Health News Digest, the pillow delivers a slow, steady stream of valuable nutrients each time you lie down and the aloe-encapsulated cover is quilted with wool, which is anti-microbial and naturally wicks moisture from the skin (excess moisture can harbour acne-causing bacteria).  The granulated latex core mimics the feel of feathers and down, but provides springy support that won't pack down.

An extra bonus:  Apparently the pillow is quite soft and plush, helping you avoid the dreaded  morning wrinkles and welts.

Interested in trying this pillow out?  Sears.com carries them and members of The Brands Club receive 1% cashback on Sears.com purchases.  Join for free and earn cashback at all of your favourite stores.

BAR REFAELI PARTNERS WITH GARNIER CANADA

In today's beauty news, Garnier Canada has announced that they have hired supermodel Bar Refaeli as their newest Garnier International spokesperson.  Bar is in good company at Garnier. Other celebrity endorsers for the brand include Sarah Jessica Parker, Sabrina Ferelli and Davina McCall.

Hélène Azancot, Garnier International's General Manager, notes: "Bar Refaeli incarnates Garnier's vision of healthy beauty.  Her hair, as well as her body, reflect wellness and health. She is perfectly in line with Garnier's values. She is natural, modern, spontaneous, and athletic; she is simply irresistible!"

Look for Bar to make her Canadian debut in Garnier Fructis Style television campaigns airing this fall.

WILL FERRELL SUNSCREEN?

In today's beauty news, we can confirm that funnyman Will Ferrel has launched a line of sunscreen.  The comedian partnered with non-profit Cancer for College to launch the line and we must admit its a clever idea.  The packaging is truly hilarious (check out the press release with pictures here).

All proceeds from the sunscreen sales will go to benefit Cancer for College's Willpowered Scholarship Fund in granting college scholarships to cancer survivors and amputees.

Will Ferrell's Sexy Hot Tan, Sunstroke and Forbidden Fruit SPF 30 are available now on Amazon, eBay and www.cancerforcollege.org.  Prices start at $11.99.  We encourage you to visit the Cancer for College website and get informed on the great work they do and how you can help.

GET SEXY, BEACH-READY SUMMER LEGS

leggs.JPGIt's that time of year again.  Women across the country are seeking the help of various skincare brands for sexy, beach ready legs.  So we thought we would share with you a list of our favourite products for sensational legs this summer!

Great shavers are a crucial component to having smooth, sexy legs.  Re-using shavers is never the way to smooth, bump-free legs and using a quality blade is a must.  Our picks for busy women include the Schick Intuition and the new Shimmer Bic Soleil.

When it comes to hair removal and leg care, Sally Hansen has some great options.  Our favourites include the Extra Strength Spray-On Shower-Off Hair Remover (just spray and rinse) and the Airbrush Shimmer for All Skin Tones (spray on for a luminous glow).

Moisturizing is key when it comes to smooth, glowing legs.  St. Ives Smooth Legs Shave Minimizing Moisturizer is a great choice (clinically proven to help you shave less often).  Another good bet is Aveeno Positively Smooth Moisturizing Lotion.

What are your favourite products for smooth legs?  Send us your top picks!  For those of you interested in the products we listed, many of them can be found at Beauty.com.  Members of The Brands Club receive 6% cashback on Beauty.com purchases.  Not a member yet?  Join for free and earn cashback at all of your favourite stores!

JESSICA SIMPSON'S BEAUTY PROJECT

60js.JPG

In today's beauty news, Jessica Simpson will soon be starring in a reality tv show tentatively titled "The Price of Beauty."  This news is a bit surprising, earlier this year Jessica faced serious criticism for a noticeable weight gain and unflattering fashion choices (who could forget the mom jeans).

Us Weekly reports in its upcoming issue that the show will be based on society's outlook of women's bodies and will center around her and a friend on a road trip in search of what people find beautiful and why," says a source.

Jessica's last foray into the reality world was with the 2003 show "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica" with then-husband Nick Lachey.

This latest show idea sounds interesting.  We'll  keep you posted as new information comes in.

FRAGRANCE - BEAUTY REVIEW

Name: Flora by Gucci

General Comments: This fragrance has been heavily promoted and having previously worn Gucci Envy Me, I was interested in giving this new Gucci fragrance a try.  I mentioned it to my husband and he picked it up for me for Mother's Day.

In the bottle the fragrance smelled pleasant and quite floral, but not unique.  I used it consecutively for three days and my first observation was that it didn't last long on my skin.  After a couple of hours, I could barely detect it.  I know Flora is intended for a younger customer, but even younger women want their fragrance to last!  The fragrance really is quite light (for Gucci) and the dry down for me was neither strong nor fresh.

I suppose I could purchase the body lotion to make the scent last longer and be more potent, but I am not really motivated to make a second purchase.  Prior to using the fragrance, friends mentioned that it reminded them of Dolce & Gabbana The One and I must say I agree.

I wouldn't purchase this fragrance again.

Approx Price: $55.00

Where to Get It: Fine department stores and Sephora.

CLINIQUE LAUNCHES NEW HIGH IMPACT MASCARA

highimpact.jpgClinique has released its newest mascara, Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara.  The tagline reads "Lash curler no longer required."  This new high impact mascara is designed to dramatically improve volume and create extreme curl for 24 hours of long wearing non-smudging effect.  Getting lashes to their longest, boldest, most upturned look without a pinch, pull, tug or tear is the dream of many women!

How does it work?  A blend of unique ingredients (including silice) provide a smooth, thin film that when dry, hold curl in place without wearing lashes down.  The new brush is also customized for this mascara.

Interested in giving it a try?  Clinique products can be purchased at fine department stores or through The Brands Club.  Members of The Brands Club receive 5% cashback on Clinique.com purchases.  Join now for free and earn cashback at all of your favourite stores.

KATE HUDSON GOES BRUNETTE

In today's beauty news, the internet has been buzzing over pictures of Kate Hudson and her new, darker hair colour.  She has darkened her normally blonde locks for a more subdued look.  She apparently made this change for her role as a schoolteacher in the film The Killer Inside Me.

Take a look here.  We personally don't think this look works for her.  It makes her face look much fuller and overall she appears heavier.  She looks frumpy and dare we say, un-Hollywood.  What do you think?  Are you digging Kate's new look?

MAC COSMETICS LAUNCHES STYLE WARRIOR

mac50.JPG In today's beauty news, Canadian beauty company Mac Cosmetics has just launched a new makeup collection titled Style Warrior.  The collection aims to channel every woman's inner animal spirit with striking and bold African inspired colour palettes.

SUMMER BEAUTY - WITH CHOCOLATE & POWDERED DRINKS?

skin85.JPGA couple of unique beauty products have come across our desks and we thought it time to put together a little post on them.

The Glowelle Beauty Drink by Nestle promises great skin to those who use their antioxidant powered packets (or pre-packaged drinks) once per day.  If you go with the powder packets (think Crystal Light packets) you mix them up with water to get the drink.

According to their website, Glowelle Beauty Drink promises to provide skin-beautifying nutrients your skin craves.  The beauty drink contains a blend of nutrients, including vitamins C & E, CoQ10, carotenoids, lutein and lycopene, combined with botanicals, including pine bark, pomegranate and green tea extracts.

Frutels (Acne Care in a Chocolate) uses antioxidants and micronutrients to clarify skin from the inside out.  According to their website, Frutels created its patent-pending formula to eliminate the causes of acne before blemishes appear on the skin because Frutels chocolates work inside your body.  Eating two to four Frutels per day will provide results in about two weeks.  Frutels is sugar free, contains no artificial ingredients and no preservatives.

Do these beauty products work?  Only time will tell and as the reviews come in we'll get a better picture of where people stand on these new products.  We're ready to give them a try.  We love new beauty treatments and chocolate is the greatest guilty pleasure!  Have you tried either of these products?  If yes, tell us what you think of them!

CELEBRITY BEAUTY NEWS RUNDOWN

Actress Winona Ryder's makeup artist Kim Collea recently revealed to People Magazine that her client has had no work done to maintain her youthful look.  She credits her great skin and overall appearance to a healthy diet, a lot of salad and lots and lots of water.  She also revealed that nowadays Winona prefers a minimalist look.  Her 90's heavy eye makeup has been replaced with a much more natural, easy palette.

MTV reality star Audrina Patidge has decided to lighten up her famous dark locks for a lighter blonder look.  She claims her natural hair colour is dirty blonde and her new look will soon be seen on MTV's The Hills.

Iman gave America's first lady an awkward compliment last week while speaking with Parade Magazine.  "Mrs. Obama is not a great beauty.  But she is so interesting looking and so bright. That will always take you farther."

Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima has been chosen to be the face of Victoria Secret's new floral fragrance, Noir.  Noir is described as an enchanting range of fruity floral products that feature a blend of sparkling nectarine, sultry amber and exotic cattelaya orchid.  The Noir collection includes eau de parfum, body lotion, bath and shower cream and body powder.  It's available in Victoria Secret stores now.

HEALTH UPDATE - SMOKING & YOUR SKIN

Science Daily reported that in a recent study by Penn State, researchers found that higher concentrations of melanin (the colour pigment in skin and hair) may be putting darker pigmented smokers at increased risk for nicotine dependence. So essentially people with darker skin would be more at risk than fair skinned people.

Gary King, professor of biobehavioral health, Penn State told Science Daily, "The point of the study is that, if in fact, nicotine does bind to melanin, populations with high levels of melanin could indicate certain types of smoking behavior, dependence, and health outcomes that will be different from those in less pigmented populations and the addiction process may very well be longer and more severe."

More research on smokers with various skin types/tones, but it's definitely one more reason to quit smoking (hopefully you already have).

BATH & BODY - BEAUTY REVIEW

avon.gifName: Skin So Soft Satin Glow Ultimate Body Moisturizing Lotion SPF 15

General Comments: This moisturizer was recommended to me by a friend who loves Avon bath and body products.

Last summer I was a big fan of the Jergens Natural Glow Moisturizers and used them to give myself a little colour.  They are low-key and low-maintenance, so it worked well for me.

My overall feeling about this product is positive.  It is very light and absorbs into skin quickly.  It added a light shimmer to my skin (not a lot of colour).  For me, it was lighter and sheerer than Jergens, but still gave me a healthy glow (I am quite fair).

Approx Price: $9.99

Where to Get It: Avon.com and Avon.ca.

Interested in submitting a product review?  Email beauty@thebrandsclub.com with the name of the product you tried and your general comments.  We will list your review as anonymous, but if you want your name in the review, just let us know. We look forward to hearing from you!

LEAD & TOXINS IN YOUR BEAUTY PRODUCTS?

There was a great article featured on Canada.com recently about lead and toxins in popular beauty products.

If you've never given it much thought, you might want to.  Stacy Malkan's warnings in her book Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry really exposes the potentially ugly side of the beauty business.  The book chronicles the use of chemicals and toxic ingredients in beauty and personal-care products.

If you want to check the products you are using, the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database is a useful resource online at cosmeticdatabase.com.  The site looks at the ingredients of more than 42,000 products, checking them against 50 toxicity and regulatory databases.

MARC JACOBS TO LAUNCH NEW FRAGRANCE

In today's beauty news, thanks to the huge success of the fragrance Daisy, a new Marc Jacobs fragrance called Lola will hit stores later this year.

Lola was developed by perfumer Calice Becker and the fragrance will contain notes of pink peppercorn, pear d'anjou, ruby red grapefruit, fuchsia peony, rose, geranium, vanilla, tonka bean and creamy musk.

This scent is expected to be a bit stronger than Daisy, but lovely nonetheless.  Keep an eye out for it!

AMERICAN BEAUTY ELIZABETH BANKS IN CANNES

ebanks.jpg

American actress Elizabeth Banks best known for her roles in Spiderman, Scrubs and Zach and Miri Make a Porno, walked the red carpet last night for the "UP" premiere during the 62nd Annual Cannes Film Festival.

Having just been named a L'Oreal spokesperson, she really needed to raise her profile and strike the perfect balance of glamour and subtlety.

She decided to go with a slightly different beauty look for the night.  She skipped the ever-popular tanned look and opted for natural, fair makeup, a nude lip and dramatic eye makeup.  Her 40's style pin-up curls and pale blonde hair all made for a striking picture.

With this appearance she solidified her position as a red carpet beauty and someone to watch.  She's well on her way to the beauty A-list!

WANT THE INSIDE SCOOP ON YOUR DNA?

In a recent CNN article, they discuss the big business of screening your genes.

In the past few years, the business of gene screening has boomed and you can now send your saliva sample to companies like Google-backed 23andMe, who will scan and analyze your genetic information for about $400.

Why do this?  Who does this?  Apparently someone who is curious about their genes and what their genes tell them about themselves.  The companies behind the technology say that consumers' ability to gauge how their genes influence risk for diseases like diabetes and cancer could revolutionize health care.

"It's evolving science.  To ignore the genetic marks that we currently understand would be complacency," says Vance Vanier, chief medical officer at Navigenics.

The entire practice is up for debate with those who are both for and against it.  What do you think?  Would you pay for information on your DNA?

CANADIAN BEAUTY - PURE + SIMPLE

We all know how hard it can be to find great beauty and skin care products.  You not only want the products, you want the advice and guidance that goes along with finding a great product.  Nothing beats having qualified assistance when buying for your skin!  So over the next month, we will share with you some of our favourite skin care/beauty boutiques.  First up, Toronto!

10.JPGPure + Simple - Toronto, Ontario
2375 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario, M4P 2C8

Pure + Simple is a Canadian owned company in the Toronto's Yonge & Eglinton neighborhood.  They offer professional makeup, spa and skin care products with no petroleum or chemical fragrances, colours/preservatives for men and women.  Brands carried include Clayton Shagal, Jurlique and Martina Gebhardt.

I visited them with a desperate need for a natural, organic moisturizer with no perfume.  During our consultation, I was invited to sit down and have my skin "examined" and then asked numerous questions about my current beauty routine.  I was deemed a perfect fit for the Martina Gebhardt Sheabutter line. The products are free of essential oils, alcohol, herbal extracts and bee products. They do not contain any preservatives, surfactants, synthetic or nature-identical raw materials, paraffin waxes or synthetic fragrances.

At the end of my visit, I came out with two new products (Martina Gebhardt Sheabutter cream and lotion) and two sample products.

The location itself is low-key and comfortable with simple, clean décor and no background noise.  Upon entering from bustling Yonge Street, it's quite peaceful!

Overall, great customer service and knowledgeable staff made my visit to Pure + Simple an enjoyable one. I am now a regular customer and highly recommend it.

INSTYLE HAIR COVER GIRL LEIGHTON MEESTER

lm65.JPG

Is Gossip Girl Leighton Meester as cool and confident as her alter-ego Blair Waldorf?  Does she possess the same fashion and beauty sensibilities?

In today's beauty news, Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester is this month's Instyle Hair cover girl.  The cover shoot features an in-depth article with the actress where she discusses both her personal and professional style and beauty secrets.

She told the magazine, "I was picked on because I was a four-eyes and a dork.  I had long tangled hair and wore hemp necklaces, baggy t-shirts and not-so-cute jeans."  For the full article, pick up this month's Instyle Hair on newsstands now.

In other Leighton Meester news, she is currently set to star with Minka Kelly in the big screen film, The Roommate.  She will play a deranged college student obsessed with her new roommate.  Keep an eye out for that in theaters next year.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT WITH LIP GLOSS?

pl1.JPGYes, you heard right.  Weight management with lip gloss.  A new product called Huge Lips, Skinny Hips Lip Plumper by Purple Lab has hit store shelves determined to be the new go-to gloss for the busy, weight conscious woman.

The key ingredient?  The gloss contains 10% Hoodia Gordoni extract, a natural appetite suppressant extracted from a cactus-like plant in Africa.  Over the last couple of years, Hoodia has become quite popular and can be found in many weight management products, but adding it to lip gloss is definitely new.

The product comes in a variety of colours and is now available at Space NK and Scoop stores.  If the launch proves successful (and it sounds like it will), expect to see it in Canadian stores soon!

HAIR CARE - BEAUTY REVIEW

Name: Tresemme 24 Hour Body Shampoo & Conditioner

General Comments:  I picked this up at my local PharmaPlus after seeing a huge display for it.

I have used it about three times so far and like it.  Both the shampoo and conditioner are lightweight and don't weight my hair down (I have fine long hair so this is important).  After blow-drying, my hair felt soft and there was a lot of body to it.

Approx Price: $6.99 per bottle

Where to Get It: Drugstores, pharmacies and where general hair care products are sold.

JLO STILL STRUGGLING TO LOSE THE BABY WEIGHT

In today's beauty news, Jennifer Lopez recently revealed that she is still struggling to lose her baby weight.

The singer-and-actress, who gave birth to twins Max and Emme last February, gained over 60lbs during pregnancy and told Exposay, "It's funny, once I gave birth I dropped 30lbs immediately and then the next 20lbs came off right away.  When I did a triathlon, I dropped another 10, and with the last 10 I'm still struggling with.  I probably have 5-6lbs more to go."

I think all new moms can relate to the struggle to lose that last couple of pounds!

RECESSION SLOWS BOTOX SALES

In today's beauty news, we take a look at an interesting article in Saturday's LA Times.

Allergan Inc., maker of Botox, reported Friday that its first-quarter profit fell 58% as the recession slowed sales of eye and beauty products.

I am not really surprised by this bit of news.  While beauty related sales at drugstores have increased, it makes sense that pricier cosmetics/procedures would decline.  What do you think?  Have you given up expensive procedures in favour of more recession-friendly beauty items?

MAKEUP - BEAUTY REVIEW

Name: Dior Capture Totale Foundation

General Comments: I am a huge fan of Dior makeup and got a free sample of the Capture Total Foundation last week.  The foundation is promoted as anti-aging and very moisturizing.  It contains multi-toned pigments so I actually got a great match with my skin tone.

Overall, I liked this product.  My skin looked brighter and my laugh lines were smoother and less noticeable.  If you're Dior fan, I think you'll like this product.

Approx Price: $75.00

Where to Get It: Sephora, StrawberryNET.com and fine department stores.

MAKEUP - BEAUTY REVIEW

Name: Mac Cosmetics (A Rose Romance Collection)

General Comments:  I saw this line at my local Mac counter and thought it looked very pretty, perfect for summer.  The line includes blushes and glosses in flattering rose shades.

After a consultation with the girl behind the counter, I decided to purchase the See Thru Lip Colour (in a shade called Loving Touch) and the Just a Pinch Gel Blush.

I absolutely love the blush!  It's sheer and so easy to use.  The colour goes on very light, giving you the chance to build colour.  You can't make a mistake with this blush!  The See Thru Lip Colour was ok, but too sheer for me.  I am quite fair and need my lips to pop with colour.  This gloss didn't work for me, but would work really well with darker skin tones or those who just want a natural light colour on the lips.

Approx Price: $40.00 for both the blush and gloss

Where to Get It: Mac Cosmetics stores or Mac counters at fine department stores.
