KLORANE LAUNCHES TRAVEL-SIZE DRY SHAMPOO

klor20.JPG

Every girl needs a great dry shampoo in their bathroom!  In our opinion, one of the best dry shampoo lines is Klorane.  Klorane gentle dry shampoos with oat milk have been key hair products used backstage at fashion week and are favorites of celebrity hair stylists.

Klorane dry shampoos use corn, rice starch and soothing oat milk to remove dirt and oil without the use of water, leaving hair soft, volumized with a fresh, clean scent.  The formula is lightweight and can be used frequently with no worries about buildup.

This month Klorane is introducing travel-sized versions of their dry shampoo.  Perfect for when you're on the go and don't have the time to do a full shampoo and blow-dry.  Check out Klorane products at Klorane.com.

THE NEW "IT" MAKEUP - YOUNGBLOOD

cc34.jpgThe most buzzed about makeup line right now is Youngblood.  This line is THE favourite for Cheryl Cole, Lindsay Lohan, Ashley Simpson, Hayden Panettiere and the cast of Heroes.

Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics is a high quality Australian based mineral makeup brand.  Youngblood uses ocean crystals and light reflective properties to ensure that the makeup goes on flawlessly and naturally.  What's interesting about this line is that it does not contain talc, perfume or chemical dyes.  It's a high quality professional brand with a huge celebrity following, but its similar to celeb fave MAC Cosmetics in that's affordable for the rest of us non-celebs.

Youngblood has just released a new lipstick line called Vixen which has been spotted on the fall/winter runways in Paris.  Keep an eye out for this new and interesting brand.

EOS - THE HOTTEST NEW LIP BALM!

With celebrity fans and a growing following, EOS Lip Balm Spheres are USDA certified organic, all natural lip products.  Packed with antioxidant-rich vitamin E, soothing shea butter and jojoba oil, EOS lip balms keep lips moist and soft.  The funky, round design (which I love) makes the lip balm easy to use.  You can get EOS lip balms in three delicious shades (honeysuckle honeydew, summer fruit, and sweet mint).  At about $4.00 each, they are a guilt-free beauty buy!

YOUTH KNOWS NO PAIN

There's a lot of buzz about the new HBO documentary Youth Knows No Pain.  The film depicts the journey of the filmmaker (Mitch McCabe) as she explores America's obsession with anti-aging and the lengths men and women will go to prevent it.

The film chronicles two years traveling across America visiting doctors, experts and the people who undergo these sometimes radical anti-aging procedures in their quest to stop the clock.  The film is said to be quite funny, but also sad as it showcases a country obsessed with staying young forever.

Youth Knows No Pain airs this Monday on HBO.  Take a look at the trailer here.

SHAPE MAGAZINE - BEST IN BEAUTY

Shape Magazine recenty shared with us the winners of their 6th annual beauty awards!  Nearly 5,000 readers, beauty pros and Shape editors weighed in and casted their votes on their favorite beauty products that were released on the market from May 08 to May 09.  See below for a partial list of Shape winners.  For a full list, pick up the September issue of Shape Magazine.

shape13.JPGFACIAL MOISTURIZERS

Clinique Comfort on Call Allergy Tested Relief Cream ($40; clinique.com).  If your face is on the drier side and seems to react to anything you put on it, "this fragrance-free formula, with skin-calming jabara fruit extract, is for you," says Shape editorial advisory board member and spa expert Mary Bemis.

FOUNDATION

Almay Pure Blends Makeup ($14; at drugstores). "My skin is very sensitive, so I don't usually wear foundation--but this one was so light, I forgot I had it on," said a tester. Made with 97 percent natural ingredients--including botanicals--this foundation is notable for what's not in it: potentially irritating fragrances, parabens, and talc.

LIP COLOR

CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain ($7; at drugstores). Testers repeatedly commented on this long-lasting stain's "fabulous texture."  "It felt like it wasn't there--even though it stayed on throughout my entire lunch," said one.  The addition of conditioners, like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, ensures that lips will stay soft and hydrated.

HAIR COLOR

L'Oréal Paris Excellence-to-Go ($9; at drugstores).  Even at-home-hair-color novices fell in love with this comb-in formula's almost instant results.  "After just 10 minutes, I had deep, rich, really natural-looking color," reported one tester.  A new technology helps pigment sink quickly into strands without causing damage.  The comb applicator also makes it easy to apply all over or just as a root touch-up.

SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER

Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Moisture Balance Shampoo and Conditioner ($4 each; at drugstores).  This cleansing and conditioning duo relies on the power of natural ingredients--cassia, calendula, ginger, and aloe vera--to leave hair silky and resilient.  The cassia complex forms a protective seal around strands that locks in moisture and helps your brush or comb glide through hair without snagging. "Daily blow-drying makes my hair brittle, but after using this combo regularly, my hair felt stronger and softer," said a tester.

ALLI NEWS

Popular, over-the-counter weight loss pill Alli is being investigated by the FDA.  Apparently there have been 30 reports of liver injury from people taking the drug.

If you're taking Alli, the FDA doesn't want you to panic.  There is no definite link between liver damage and Alli yet and they confirm that's ok to keep using it.  If you do feel odd or have any unusual side effects like nausea, fever, etc your advised to see your doctor asap.

If taking Alli, I would suggest visiting your doctor regardless of whether you feel fine or not.  It's always best to get a doctor's feedback when something like this comes to light.  Better to be safe and informed!

DRUGSTORE LIP GLOSSES

Lately, it seems like the local drugstore is full of new lip glosses and lip plumpers.  Everyone is desperate to get a luscious shiny, full-looking pout!  I had the opportunity to try a few of the new drugstore glosses and believe it or not, actually thought highly of them.  They were just as good as the department store brands.  Which is quite surprising because I always thought that the department store lip glosses were superior to the drugstore glosses.  I think the drugstore brands have gotten much better and with the cheaper prices, it definitely makes sense to use both department and drugstore brands.  I can't always make it to a department store for my Mac and Dior glosses, so it's nice to know I can get some good quality options at my local Shoppers Drugmart!  See below for a write-up on a few of our faves.

Marcelle - Vita-Lip Plumping Gloss

This new lip gloss is light and easy to use.  No stickiness or tackiness here.  The Marcelle Vita-Lip gloss was very moisturizing and the color range was good.  I tried out the colour Desire (light pink). The only issue with this lip gloss is that it didn't last as long as I hoped (had to re-apply every couple of hours).  Other than that, it was very comfortable and the colour quite pretty.  Price: $10.95

Rimmel London - Volume Booster Lip Gloss

9 shades to choose from and according to Rimmel, up to 40% fuller lips.  This lip gloss has high colour and shine with a lacquer finish.  The gloss does tingle (though not as bad as Lip Venom).  The colors here are gorgeous and Volume Booster Lip Gloss actually worked just as well (shine and colour wise) as MAC Lip Glass (my favorite gloss company by far).  Price: $6.99

KATE MOSS - WRINKLED & WORN OUT?

kmoss67.JPGIn today's beauty news, Kate Moss is being bashed by tabloids and online bloggers for her less than perfect face while on vacation in St. Tropez.  The legendary "it" girl" is 35 years old and she's starting to look it.  Sun damage, cigarette smoking and a history of drug dependency have made Kate look positively worn out and her critics are loving every minute of it.

The controversy started late last week when Kate was photographed on holiday in St Tropez. Her natural skin was on display in the summer sun and it was shocking to many.  Wrinkled, and with evident sun damage, she didn't even remotely resemble the Kate Moss we know and love.  What's ironic here is that she's on the cover of Vogue next month with not a wrinkle in sight.  Take a look at the pics here

We have to ask, why is this a big deal?  We all age and it shouldn't be considered shameful or sad when those dreaded wrinkles and imperfections appear.  I suppose the issue here is that Kate Moss has always been considered an icon of the young and hip and not a symbol of an aging 90's supermodel.  I guess that belief is starting to change.

SK-II SKIN CARE & MAKEUP

1sk.jpgOver the past couple of years, there has been a growing buzz in North America about Japanese skin care company SK-II.  The buzz has to do with the fact that Cate Blanchett is a huge fan (and the face of the brand), but also the fact that the brand is delivering results to those that try it.  Sales are up and the company has no plans to slow down.

The key ingredient in SK-II products in Pitera.  According to legend, Pitera was discovered by accident.  Thirty years ago, a scientist noticed that the hands of workers at a Japanese saké brewery looked beautiful and young.  After doing more research, Pitera was found during the yeast's fermentation process and is a blend of blend of vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and organic acids.  Pitera works on the skin surface renewing the outer layer.

0sk.jpgSK-II now has a makeup line.  The line features products that glide on smoothly like a second skin, offer broad spectrum protection against the damage of UV rays, help hide fine lines & imperfections and leave you with a lightened, flawless complexion.  Available products include liquid foundations and pressed powders.  If you want to learn more, visit the SK-II site for more info.

Members of The Brands Club can buy SK-II products through FragranceNet.com at discounted prices.  If you're not already a member of The Brands Club, join today for free!

KICKSTART YOUR MORNING BEAUTY ROUTINE

piv85.JPGNow that summer is starting to wrap up, it's time to re-vamp your skin care routine.  Hot summers and dry conditions can cause skin to become lackluster, flaky and dull.  One way to get your skin back in shape is dry body brushing.

Dry body brushing is exactly how it sounds, you literally brush your skin.  Legs, tummy, back and arms all get dry brushed.  Dry brushing stimulates the skin and encourages skin growth.  It can also help by removing dead skin layers, strengthening the immune system, tightening the skin and some people even claim it helps with cellulite.

Buy an inexpensive soft bristle brush (available at shops like Fruits & Passion and Body Shop) and brush your skin starting from the bottom up.  Keep the brushing light and make sure your skin doesn't get overly irritated.  Great to do in the morning before your morning coffee and shower (helps wake you up)!

SKIN CARE FOR UNDER $2 DOLLARS?

In today's beauty news, British drugstore chain Superdrug has launched their own facial skin care line called Skin Essentials.  Why is this newsworthy?  Well, for starters, each product is only 1 British Pound (about $1.80 CAD).

Superdrug says their budget skincare line has been designed to offer straightforward skin care in straightforward packaging.  No fancy labels or jars here.  This is basic, simple beauty for a girl on a budget who wants quality skin care at a low price.  The Skin Essentials line which (launched today in the UK) offers skincare for customers fed up with paying for packaging, costly promotion and glossy advertising.

The range offers two types of cleanser, eye make-up remover, face wash and moisturizer.  When British beauty brand, Boots No. 7 came to North America it caused a sensation.  If Superdrug Skin Essentials plans to come to North America, we'll be the first to let you know!

PURPLE LAB SET TO LAUNCH GOJI BERRY SMOOTHIE LIP GLOSS

One of our favourite lip gloss companies, Purple Lab (Huge Lips, Skinny Hips), is coming out with a new line of lip gloss.

The new gloss will launch this fall and will be called "Goji Berry Smoothie," after the Purple Lab creator's favorite antioxidant-rich morning beverage.  As expected, this lip gloss isn't your ordinary gloss.  It's made of antioxidant-rich mangosteen and a heavy dose of vitamin E and C.  It will also be free of cancer-causing parabens.

The October launch is a tie-in to Breast Cancer Awareness month.  Twenty percent of the proceeds will go to charity Sealed With a Cure.  We'll keep you posted as to when it launches in Canada.

MARC JACOBS - LOLA FRAGRANCE

gggg80.JPG

One of my favorite fragrances is the original fragrance by Marc Jacobs.  Like most fragrances, it reminds me of a particular time and place in my life.

Since that fragrance launch, Marc Jacobs has released a series of irresistible fragrances.  His newest is LOLA.  LOLA is a warm floral bouquet with rich layers of sensuous floral blooming with a signature of the fuschia peony.  LOLA contains fruity top notes of bright pink peppercorn, seductive pear d'anjou and succulent ruby red grapefruit.  The base notes include smooth vanilla, tonka bean and creamy musk.

The LOLA fragrance line includes eau de parfum, sensual body lotion, silky shower gel and luxurious body cream.  Prices range from $45 - $85.

LOLA will launch nationwide September 2009.

TYRA BANKS LOSES HER WEAVE

In today's beauty news, Tyra Banks tweeted that she is planning on going natural and will stop using hair extensions.  She wrote on Twitter, "Guess What! I'm rockin' my REAL hair on my talk show September 8th." she says.  "No fake hair at all! Will be the hair coming out of my scalp! 4 all 2 C!"

This all comes courtesy of Sept. 8 National Real Hair Day and Tyra is encouraging all women to wear their hair naturally.  Tyra has been wearing weaves so long; we don't actually know what her real hair looks like.  I have a feeling it's a short bob-type look, but who knows!  We'll be watching on Sept 8.

WANT LONGER, DARKER EYELASHES? - WE'VE GOT SOME IDEAS

At Canada's Beauty Blog, we keep hearing more and more about eyelash applications that promise to lengthen, darken and increase the thickness of your lashes.  A lot of the hype is due to Latisse, an FDA approved prescription treatment that promises longer, thicker and darker eyelashes.

If you're not ready to try Latisse (not available in Canada yet and it can run anywhere from $115 - $150 per month), there are some new eyelash conditioners readily available over the counter.  If you're in the market for longer thicker lashes, one of these options might works for lashfood.jpgyou.  Take the time to visit each site to see which one is right right for you.

RapidLash Eyelash Renewal Serum -  RapidLash is a new high-performance serum formulated with advanced polypeptides that helps improve the length, thickness and volume of your eyelashes.  You only need to apply the serum once per day and its suitable for both men and women.  Price range: $50 - $80 for a 30-60 day supply.

Lashfood Eyelash Conditioner - Lashfood promises longer, thicker, darker lashes and is a 100% natural, hypo-allergenic conditioner.  Lashfood can also be used on the eyebrows for a smooth and even brow line.  Lashfood contains the vitamin biotin, the amino acid arginine and a blend of 15 herbs.  Users are asked to apply the product twice per day and can expect results in 2-4 weeks.  Price range: $110 - $130 for a 4-5 month supply.

neuLash Active Eyelash - neuLash promotes healthy, natural lashes using paraben-free, cosmetically approved ingredients including essential proteins, vitamins and moisturizers.  Use once daily in the evening and expect to see noticeable results in about 4 weeks.  Price range: $125 - 175 for a three-month supply.

MISTURA BEAUTY - A GREAT CANADIAN BEAUTY FIND

ksn1.jpgIn our ongoing quest to provide you with info on Canada's best beauty brands, we bring you a post on Mistura Beauty.  Mistura Beauty is a celebrity favourite (Karina Smirnoff and AnnaLynne McCord are just a few of the fans) and one of Canada's most unique and high profile beauty brands.  I admit I didn't initially know much about Mistura Beauty, but having now read up on the brand and quizzed a few people here who have tried it, I can say that they do offer a great solution for that busy woman on the go.  A woman who wants a flawless face, but doesn't want the hassle (and high costs) associated with using multiple products and brands.

Mistura has made it easy to buy just one product and have it do everything for you.  You don't need to buy concealer, foundation, bronzer, etc.  The absolute gem in the Mistura Beauty line is the Mistura  6-in-1 Beauty Solution Kit.  This powder provides a glowing, natural finish to all skin types and colours.  The powder will also hide blemishes, mute rosacea, glide over fine lines and wrinkles and bring an instant brilliance to pale skin tones.

Mistura other products include The Ultimate 6-in-1 Beauty Solution Kit , the 6-in-1 Solution Compact,  Luminada Moisturizer, Vitamin E Lip Treatment and Luxury Applicator Brush.  To get more info on this great Canadian brand, visit the Mistura Beauty site www.misturabeauty.com.

STELLA MCCARTNEY & ALI HEWSON FIGHT IT OUT

stella11.jpgIn today's beauty news, two of Britain's most popular women are suing each over a fragrance name.  Superstar Bono's wife, Ali Hewson is suing Stella McCartney over the use of the word nude - the name of her own skincare collection.  Stella's latest fragrance is called StellaNude.

A source close to the case told the Daily Mail, 'Stella isn't likely to make any changes now because the fragrance is coming out in September and nudity is a big part of the perfume's look.  The bottle, for example, is a nude colour."

The case is set to go to trial in London this fall.  We'll keep you posted on how it goes!

FERGIE & PENELOPE PACK ON THE POUNDS

pc50.JPGBy now, most of you have heard that the musical Nine is coming to theaters soon.  Black Eyed Peas frontwoman Fergie and actress Penelope Cruz are just a few of the stars in the film and both had to gain 17 pounds before shooting for Nine could begin.  "We were eating our brains out.  We ordered everything fried and full of fat and salty," Us Magazine quoted Fergie as telling the July issue of Allure.

Fergie did find that losing the weight was a bigger challenge than she expected and tabloids reported her as being pregnant.  "If I don't do sit-ups, my stomach sticks out," she said.  "It was a very gradual thing, getting back into it and finally letting a trainer train me.  I didn't want to be told what to do, and I wasn't mentally ready to crack the whip," she added.

Due to a noticeable weight gain, tabloids are currently reporting that Penelope Cruz is pregnant.  Is it true or is she still carrying some of the weight from the Nine production?  No confirmation yet from Ms. Cruz.

GETTING RID OF OLD MAKEUP

You probably never really noticed, but there are no US laws which mandate that cosmetics come with an expiry date.  So if you're like us, you likely end up keeping makeup (and using it) for a lot longer than you should.

Examiner.com posted a great article by Rebecca Markus on how to tell if your makeup is past its prime.  According to Examiner.com, foundations and concealers generally have a shelf life of twelve to eighteen months.  If a liquid foundation has separated in the bottle it has probably gone bad.  If it's past its prime, the makeup will have a different consistency and be harder to apply.

Lipstick can have a lifespan of three years, depending on the formula.  Sunscreen in the lipstick generally isn't effective past that point.

Eye makeup has the shortest lifespan once it's opened.  This is due to repeated exposure to microbes and bacteria.  Mascara, for example, should be replaced every three months.

Pay attention to when you buy makeup and what kind of condition it's in as time goes on.  The last thing you need is a raging eye infection or pink eye during that special date or anniversary party!

HAIR CARE - READER QUESTION OF THE WEEK

b500.JPGI love to dye my own hair and use Nice & Easy most often.  Lately, I have noticed my hair has gotten very brassy.  Its naturally strawberry blonde and I wanted it blonder, but now it's kind of getting orangey in spots.  What can I do?  Can I fix at home or do I need to visit a salon to fix this and prevent future problems?  -  Bridgette, Vancouver, British Columbia

Most store brands cannot lift as high as professional products.  It is difficult to colour your hair yourself.

Most people tend to overlap or pull the colour through to the ends.  This causes colour build up which causes the overall colour to become darker and duller.  Colour can't lift colour either.  I highly recommend visiting a salon in your area with colour expertise.

JUICY COUTURE GOES "COUTURE" FOR LATEST FRAGRANCE

Fashion powerhouse Juicy Couture will launch a new fragrance this fall titled Couture Couture.

Speaking to WWD, Juicy Couture co-founder Gela Nash-Taylor said, "We decided we wanted a decadent sister to our other fragrances.  We always like clean, fresh scents but wanted to try something a little different with this one."

The new fragrance has top notes of mandarin, pink grape accord and natural orange flower; a heart of star jasmine, blushed plum and honeysuckle, and a drydown of moist amber, creamy sandalwood and vanilla extract.

The fragrance will also have accompanying products including body lotion, shower gel and dry oil spray.  Keep an eye out for the products in October.

KIM KARDASHIAN GOES BLONDE

In today's beauty news, Kim Kardashian has officially dyed her normally black locks blonde.  Kim debuted the look at yesterday's Teen Choice Awards.

We think the new look is a nice change for Kim.  It gives her look some depth and the colour is a great blend of blonde shades.  Get your first look at Kim's new look here.

Heroes star Dania Ramirez has just signed on as the newest face of CoverGirl Cosmetics. She spoke with Latina.com about the role.  "I'm not from this country; I have struggled and worked really hard to get everything I have," she says.  And in the end, to Dania what this gig is really about is understanding that beauty comes from anywhere and everywhere.  Growing up I didn't have a lot of people I could identify with, [or have as] good role models.  So being a Cover Girl is about that--being a role model to women and inspiring young women to feel like they can do anything through hard work."

MINX NAILS - A CELEBRITY BEAUTY CRAZE

      rihana13.JPG

By now, you have probably noticed numerous celebrities sporting Minx Nails (I certainly have).  Minx is a new nail fashion that is made of flexible film and is applied through heat and pressure.  Because it's a film and not a polish, it is available in a wide range of metallics and designs that actually extend fashion to your fingertips.  You can make a strong statement with your nails, which is why so many celebrities and beauty mavens already love the brand and concept!

Minx is a celebrity favourite and has been worn by many including Beyoncé Knowles, Victoria Beckham, Rihanna,  Christina Aguilera, Blake Lively, Mariah Carey, Pink, Lady Gaga, Lily Allen, Eve, Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole, Leona Lewis, Liv Tyler, Fergie, Katy Perry, Lindsay Lohan and Kelly Clarkson.  It truly is a staple in Hollywood.

Minx lasts approximately four to eight days on the fingers, and up to four weeks on the toes.  Prices for Minx application vary depending on the salon, but the average price for a Minx manicure/pedicure and application ranges from $45 to $85.

It's important to note that Minx is a professional product, so it's only available through certified nail technicians.

Want to give it a try?  To find a salon or spa near you that offers Minx, visit the www.minxnails.com.
