FLOWER GARDEN MADE EASY

It's the time of the year where I focus on my garden as much as on my closet!

Most parts of North America are now in prime planting season for both nursery grown annuals and perennials for that instant garden look. Planning a garden is somewhat like planning your wardrobe, you have to think of the color palette, the size and shapes of the flowers, and how it all mixes together. Best of course is some professional time with a gardener where coupled with your vision and their experience you can get the best results. Nevertheless, amateur gardeners can do just as well with a bit of research and an idea of the look they like. Besides it's a lot of fun also!

Here is a video offering some tips for planting a perenial garden so that you may have cut flowers all season long.

I found amost everything a beginner gardener needs at the Gardener's Supply Company from accessories to gardening supplies to actual flower stocks. Also an excellent source of information with lots of articles and how to's. I just read this article on planting spring bulbs for fall flowering Dahlias, hopefully I'm not too late to plant these gorgeous flowers.

We planted these perennials( Hydrangea and Lilac)  last year and they are coming up nicely:

Endless Summer™ Hydrangea         Blushing Bride Hydrangea        Josée Lilac

MATERNITY FASHION

Recently a reader wrote in to ask if there is anything stylish that she can wear during her pregnancy which she can still wear after she had the baby.

I have done some research and most definitely the best bet here are the loose, lightweight tunic/tops and empire waist cotton dresses. Particularly in the summer the garments would not be constricting and the empire style of the fabric gathered in the front will fall back nicely after you had the baby. Avoid fussy zippers, buttons or small arm and neck holes.

I wouldn't spend too much on maternity pants or jeans because you would not be wearing them at any time after. You would be better off with a yoga style pant made with lycra which you can fit over your belly inititally and then under. If the pants are good quality they will hold their fit after your pregnancy.

Same thing with a bathing suit, I would go for a tankini ( two piece) that cover the tummy. If it has drawstrings on the side, you will be able to tighten the bodice after you had the baby.

Here are some nice looks from A Pea In The Pod ( who are also having a 75% off sale):

A Pea in the Pod Maternity lilly pulitzer side ruched maternity tankini swimsuit  A Pea in the Pod Maternity language 3/4 sleeve v-neck knot front maternity shirt    A Pea in the Pod Maternity sleeveless bubble hem maternity dress  A Pea in the Pod Maternity sleeveless tie front maternity dress

AMY WINEHOUSE- CELEBRITY FASHION DESIGNER ?

Amy Winehouse p.r photos 2.JPGAccording to Grazia, Amy Winehouse, yes she of the famous bee hive hairdo's, the super scrawny frame, the drug abuse and so on.. has now teemed up with PPQ to create her own fashion line:

"Karl Lagerfeld's called her his muse - sending Chanel models down the catwalk with Amy Winehouse-style beehives. Jonathan Kelsey designed the 'Amy' shoe in her honour. She's sung for the fashion crowd at a Fendi party in Paris Fashion Week and practically made the Preen Power dress famous when she rocked it on the red carpet at the Brits. But since Amy Winehouse spiralled into a vicious cycle of drugs and drink, her style status has waned somewhat. Until now. We've just discovered the singer is teaming up with PPQ to create her own fashion range. 'There have been talks with Amy and we are now in the first stages of the project,' Amy Molyneaux, one half of PPQ design duo, told us . 'The range will be all about high-end statement pieces, inspired by Amy's style. For  example maybe an amazing piece of jewellery like a bracelet or a dress. It's going to be distributed online, we are going to be providing all materials and doing the design, but Amy will definitely be involved in the creative process. ... this will be a homage to Amy's look.' Makes sense considering it's the label of choice for the young London music/scenester crowd, and hopefully this could be a turning point for Amy - first the fashion, then the music..."

As previously discussed in this blog, some celebrity designers have surprised and delighted with their creations. Notably: Kate Moss, Nicole Ritchie, Victoria Beckham. Amy Winehouse success as a designer still remains to be seen...

LOUIS VUITTON: ART, FASHION AND ARCHITECTURE NEW BOOK

Louis Vuitton Book 2009A new hardcover book from Louis Vuitton fashion experts comes out in early September. The book examines relationships between art and fashion, and will feature over 400 illustrations and an embossed artist created cover. Sure to be a gorgeous coffee table book and an interesting read from one of the most enduring fashion brands of our times.

This is what the description says:

Luxury and art have never been more closely linked than they are in these early years of the twenty-first century. Virtually all the world's major luxury houses have associated themselves with contemporary art through sponsorships, commissions, or foundations, and these points of exchange nourish the increasingly symbiotic relationship between fashion, art, and other design disciplines.

Of all modern luxury brands, Louis Vuitton can claim to maintain the richest and most varied associations with the world of art. Included in this volume are Louis Vuitton's important collaborations with an elite group of artists, architects, designers, and photographers, such as Jun Aoki, Shigeru Ban, Vanessa Beecroft, Olafur Eliasson, Zaha Hadid, David LaChapelle, Jean Larivière, Annie Leibovitz, Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, Stephen Sprouse, James Turrell, Inez Van Lamsweerde, and Vinoodh Matadin.

The book is structured as a seductive anthology of the house's most visible collaborations. Critical essays examine and position Louis Vuitton's patronage--under the guidance of Artistic Director Marc Jacobs--during one of the most fertile periods of contemporary art and design.

The book can be pre-ordered at Chapters/Indigo for $68.64 and includes Free shipping.      The Brands Club cashback is 3% and you must be signed in to shop.

FASHION TREND:BEADS THE GUILT FREE FASHION STATEMENT

" And the bead goes on and the bead goes on..."

Beading has become a North American fashion favorite arts and crafts past time and is fast becoming mainstream fashion statement. Starting with little girl toy kits to full time fashion designers working with precious and semi precious stones, beading has come a long way from the small colorful plastic orbits which became popular in the 60's.

shoes small.JPGThe biggest evolution of THE BEAD is that in addition to adorning wrists and necks in handmade jewelry you now see beading on purses, clothes and even shoes.

In this story, some even believe that this is the new Bling and much more befitting the new chiconomics mentality. Well the look, has our vote. Fresh, new and inexpensive!

INVITE SAYS "BLACK TIE","UPSCALE", "CASUAL" - WHAT TO WEAR!

May/June is traditionally the spring /summer party season in Canada and U.S.A. Between weddings, proms, charity events, gallery openings and so on, a girl just needs clothes!

Here is how to decipher the party invites and what to wear:

 "Black Tie"-

Dressy, usually long gown or evening dress for women , tux and bow tie for men.

"Upscale Casual":

Coctail dress, dressy pants and top, dinner suit for women,  suit /sport jacket with no tie for men ( variations on the theme, but no jeans or t-shirts)

Try these dresses from Queen Bee Girls:

1. Diane Von Furstenberg Domino Drees 2. CK Bradley Bamba Dress

Diane Von Furstenberg Domino Dress -2.JPG     ck Bradley Bamba Dress- Queen Bee Girls 2.JPG

wear with these gorgeous accessories from Queen Bee Girls:

Keneth Jay enamel leopard bracelet    kenneth jay enamel leopard bracelet 2.JPG  claudia accessories double key bracelet 2.JPG Claudia Accessories Double Key Bracelet

The tricky one is the:

"Casual" invite

This definitely requires some interpretation: is this an invite to a back yard bbq or an event? Is this a small gathering or a big to do? Answering some of those will help set the LOOK.

In this case, men definitely have it easier and can wear the fashion spectrum from nice jeans with quality t-shirt or polo shirt, to khakis with dress shirt ( sleeves rolled up) and so on. With women, the look can also run the style gamut from nice jeans with dressy t-shirt to the little black/white/red dress to a print sundress. Heels or flats will be determined whether it's a private event or a big party. The bigger the event the dressier the outfit and the higher the heel!

Here are some pretty casual dresses from EDUN a for -profit organization started by Bono and Ali Hewson. I like their philosophy of fashion with a purpose to help others....

From EDUN"s company description:

Founded on the premise of trade as a means of building sustainable communities in developing countries to help foster economic growth rather than provide charity.EDUN utilizes locally run factories in Africa, South America and India. EDUN does not build and does not own these factories.

FASHION NEWS: THE DEVIL WEARS...SUNGLASSES?

In this fascinating interview on 60 minutes the often feared, sometimes revered and the inspiration behind the wildly popular movie " The Devil wears Prada", Vogue fashion editor Anna Wintour tells interviewer Morley Safer that sunglases are her armour.

"Asked why she often dons her large, trademark sunglasses, Wintour told Safer, "Well, they're seriously useful. I mean, I can sit in a show, and if I'm bored out of my mind, nobody will notice. And if I'm enjoying it, nobody will notice. So, I think at this point they've become, you know, really armor."

She has been the Editor of Vogue for over 21 years and has been called the most powerful woman in fashion, often making or breaking a designer's career with her "recommendations".

In addition to her salary she commands an additional $200,000 in clothing allowance ,makeup and hair. Incredible for a woman who dropped out of high school at 16.

MORE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL CELEBRITY NEWS

As more glamorous celebrities arrive we get a glimpse of the Film World in Cannes.

Here is a look at fabulous Mariah Carey, her co-stars and other arrivals on the Red Carpet.

FASHION TREND- CELEB BOHO HEADBANDS

I am still undecided if I'm loving this old " new" again look being sported by young Hollywood actresses such as : Nicole Ritchie, Ashlee Simpson and Mischa Barton to name a few.

House of Harlow 1960 Crystal Five Strand Headpiece-PRE ORDER

The horizontal hippie head bands definitely attract attention and chanel that 60's vibe, but it only looks good with perfectly straight hair, mostly parted in the middle. That's not a hair look which is flattering to most women.

Nevertheless if you like the look, pair it with a loose bohemian top with an ethnic print and a pair of capris for a nice day time look.

To really make a statement in the evening, pair the headband with high heeled wedges, denim shorts or mini dress and a fringed accessory ( purse, vest).

You might get a few "peace signs" flashed at you, but hey you are confident enough to pull off the look, "peace out" right back at them!

Sign in to shop Nicole Ritchie's House of Harlow at The Brands club for the look, at pinkmascara.com and receive 4% cashback on all your purchases.

FASHION AFTER BABY - HERE'S HOW TO LOOK YOUR BEST

No matter that the Brooke Burke's or Heidy Klum's of the world seem to whip out multiple babies and then model lingerie weeks after giving birth, most of us are simply not going to look like that for a while. So what to wear in the meantime?

First and foremost according to this Canada.com article, go through your closet and find clothes that fit ,flatter and dress for the way you look right now. The writer and new mom Lisa Kadane, enlisted the services of a mommy stylist, Kim Flannagan, here are some of  the style tips:

"Most of my clients are moms ... going from having a paycheque to not," she says, adding that they feel bad about spending money on clothes for themselves, or they're waiting to lose all of their baby weight before they go shopping. While understandable, neither scenario need be reality.

Ensembles can be up-dated on a budget, she says. A simple cami can do wonders for a new mom's trouble spots: chest and tummy (Flanagan wears one almost every day under a shirt). Jeans must fit properly: "Ill-fitting clothes are never a deal."

Her best advice? "Dress for the body you have now." It can be a difficult prescription to follow for moms adjusting to a new baby and new role -- they just want their body back.

But wearing a cute new T-shirt that fits is better than shlumping around in an old, pilling, Ernie and Bert sweater any day.

- - -

Mommy must-haves

Do add these to your wardrobe:

1. A pair of jeans that fit.

2. The Big Top: a T-shirt that can be belted, accessorized or worn under a jacket.

3. Great, tall black boots.

4. A cardigan, but not your mom's twin set. Longer styles and belts add pizzazz to this staple.

5. The vest, but fitted and funky. "Add the vest and voila, dressed!" says Flanagan.

6. A pencil skirt never goes out of style. Always sexy, can be dressed up

8. Metallic wedges for spring. They're fun and surprisingly comfy for moms-on-the-run.

9. A wrap sweater defines the bust while hiding the tummy. This versatile number goes with jeans or dresses and can be belted, worn loose or tied in the front.

10. A bra that fits, worn under a cami, to vanquish forever the muffin top."

I would also add a great pair of support hose or shapewear will go a long way in creating a slimming silhouette.

FASHION TRENDS:BATHING SUITS - STYLE, FIT AND FASHION

The moment you have been avoiding has finally arrived!

And that of course is the nightmare of bathing suit shopping. Really it does not need to be that bad, the key is the fit! Here are some tips from Allure magazine article:

1. Test the fit:

"To test the fit of tops and bottoms, bend down as if you were picking up a towel. The suit should move with you, and you shouldn't be popping out anywhere."

2. Get properly measured:

" But first, make sure your measurements are accurate by having someone at a lingerie shop size your bust (it's probably different than you think) and hips."

3. Choose the right style for your shape:

"To flatter the hips, look for a bikini bottom that ties on the side and hits low on the leg. To accentuate décolletage and de-emphasize your stomach, try a fitted-bodice tankini that falls two to three inches below your navel. For a small chest, forget padding. It looks fake. A slight V-neck adds subtle dimension. For fuller chests, cups with side darts and seaming give shape, while wide straps and underwires provide support. And my favorite suit for an hourglass figure is our "pinup" one-piece--a strapless suit with shirring at the sides. It plays up curves for a retro, glamorous look."

SUMMER FASHION TREND - SCARVES

                                                      Love Quotes Scarves

Yes it would seem that scarves would be put away in the closet as soon as those warm rays hit our face, but the latest fashion trend is wearing a linen or woven colorful scarf wrapped twice around your neck.

The designs come in variety of styles , the most prevalent and popular being the linen scarf with tassels on the end in a multitude of delicious summer sherbert colours.

Great way to add a splash of colour to your summer whites or beiges and instantly style up your look.

PARTY DRESSES - WHAT TO WEAR

Stella McCartney eveningwear.JPGThe party season is upon us, be it the Prom, Weddings, Receptions, Charity Events or just a fun get together with your friends.

Warm weather brings out all the hibernators and we just can't wait to get into some pretty clothes after being buried under layers all winter.

And Pretty they are indeed. If the Party of the Year, the Met's annual ball in NYC was any indication, we are in for some unbridled glamour in the designs exhibited by the main fashion designers.

Gold, sequins, full ball gowns and super short fitted numbers are the main trends. It seems that the only wrong way to go, is to be too conservative or modest.

Take it your direction from the style trendsetters,  live it up and go for the bold statements!

KATE MOSS WINS "DRESS OF THE YEAR" AWARD

Beating out notables such as Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen, Versace just to name a few, this novice designer or as she calls herself " not a proper designer" was awarded the prestigious Dress of the Year award by the Bath Fashion Museum.

kate moss small.JPGThe dress, a polka dot, 40's inspired dress was designed by Moss for her line at the trendy London and now New York store, Topshop.

According to this article from the Independent in London, her win signifies a change in the fashion world:

"Fashion commentators suggested yesterday that the award to what is, in essence, a high street, fast-fashion outfit, represents a shift in the UK industry away from haute couture and the designer label obsession of the 1990s towards a more democratic, recession-conscious view.

"Great style is not about a bottomless budget: a high street dress can own its style credentials as convincingly as a couture one," said Paula Reed, fashion journalist  for Grazia magazine, who selected this year's winning designs.

"We are living in extraordinary times: 2008 is likely to be seen by our children as a watershed moment - the end of a glittering party, when we consumed, celebrated and indulged ourselves like we were guests at a table groaning with good things that would never end. Circumstances demand we become wiser now" she said. "

"Since 1999 we have been making custom tote bags out of recycled sails. Every bag we make has sailed around the world before it even leaves our shop, and we like that.

  • Each bag is designed and inspired from the sail itself and all vary in texture and fabric. All are durable, water resistant and washing-machine friendly.
  • Most of our bags (like most sails) are white or off white dacron with a colored design on them but we use all sails from canvas to Kevlar.
  • Each Sea Bag has rope handles that are hand-spliced in our shop in Portland, Maine - the splice is a nautical skill and what differentiates a Sea Bag.
  • Sea Bags totes come in small, medium and large and a variety of designs and colors. "

FASHION , DESIGNERS AND MODELS THROUGH THE AGES

Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala is a staple of the New York City high end social scene.

Last night's event called " Model and Muse:Embodying Fashion" did not dissapoint with the star show out in full force. In this video, Kate Moss is wearing a gorgeous one shouldered Marc Jacobs gold dress. Being Mark's muse of course meant he was her date for the event. Heidy Klum and Elizabeth Hurley look breath taking in their floor sweeping gowns.

Kohle Yohannan ,co-curator of the show, narates the video and brings a historical perpective to the fashions and the by-gone era of the supermodel .

    FASHION NEWS: THE DESIGNER DICTIONARY

Did you know that Vera Wang was a former senior editor of Vogue magazine, before starting her wildly successful wedding dress line? Or that Zac Posen started his collection at the age of 16?

Learn all that and more in this " designer dictionary" a  guide to the world's top fashion designers posted on the budget fashionista site. The site founder Kathryn Finney is a lady after my own heart.

This descriptive guide not only provides the names of the top designers, but also a link to their sites and a brief description of products and history. The best tip is a phonetic prononciation guide to the designer's names.

How do you say Versace? "Pronunciation : Verr-sha-chie" and NOT Ver-say-chy.

JESSICA SIMPSON FIGHTS BACK WITH SHOES AND BAGS!

jessica simpson.jpgOnly 28 years old, this entertainer has certainly withered more than her share of criticism.

From the embarassing " chicken of the sea" episode on the "Newly Weds: Nick and Jessica" reality show, when still married to Nick Lache. To the latest debacle of pictures of her on a singing tour, wearing 'mom jeans' and looking, well let's say less then slender.

What many people do not realize and according to this  Vogue article , is that this young woman is actually becoming a celebrity line fashion brand powerhouse, with her own line of shoes, clothes and lingerie.

""The Jessica Simpson Collection is a $400 million business," she said. "My mom and I are creative directors. We have hundreds of people working, but nothing gets by us. It's adorable and it's affordable.

What's amazing right now, during this recession, is that, somehow, the business keeps growing."

To boot, the now slender Jessica is a total WOW in these gorgeous pictures , shot by the famous Mario Testino.

So I say, Good for you Jessica ! To see Jessica Simpson's line of shoes, bags and accessories click here .

DESIGNER LUXURY BRANDS STILL ON TOP

According to this Forbes.com article, the top luxury brands such as  Louis Vuitton in first place, followed by Hermes, Gucci, Chanel and Rolex are still holding their appeal for the value seeking consumer.

"Brands that offer luxury treats--glasses, belts, handbags, etc.--are less vulnerable," says Nikhil Gharekhan, senior vice president at Millward Brown.

Although the dollar value of most of these brands has decreased--Louis Vuitton's, for instance, dropped by $6.34 billion from $25.74 billion in 2008--their standing on the overall list remains solid because luxury brands have weathered the financial storm better than their mid-market counterparts. It has a lot to do with branding positioning. In other words, right now, consumers want to shop, but not as much--even if they can afford to do so. That means that they're buying one luxury handbag for $1,500 rather than five less-expensive handbags at $300 each. "

As I blogged previously it's all about being a SMART SHOPANISTA right now, find the best quality top branded item for less! In other words get good stuff at the best price you can find.
